Iceland - the most exciting place to be this summer
This summer Iceland is the only place in the world where you can explore
new lava and see fresh ashfall. Like the whole world knows Iceland is
experiencing its second volcanic eruption this year. The first one starting
the 21st of March and ending the 13th of April; a spectacular fiery eruption
leaving lots of lava that is now cooling off.
The second one in Eyjafjallajökull started the 14th of April and
has been more disruptive than the first one as everybody travelling by
air for the last week or so knows. This eruption has spewed a lot of ash
up into the sky with some local ashfall as well.
The media has played these eruptions up so that some think that the Icelanders
all walk around with gasmasks with their lives being threatened every
day. Quite the opposite is true though; living in the southwest part of
Iceland we haven't seen any ash at all and nobody has been injured or
died.
Yes there is some ash on the ground in the vicinity of the volcano but
the roads are all open so that you can drive around the island and travel
wherever you want to go, except ofcourse climbing on Eyjafjallajökull.
The fact is that most of the ash gets blown away from Iceland over to
Europe and even Canada. This second eruption is not nearly as strong now
as it was in the beginning and some experts think it may be cooling off
although it is still hard to tell. It is a fact though that it seems to
be changing from an eruption spewing mostly ash into one that produces
more lava than ash. If that continues the ashfall will diminish and air
traffic can get back to normal.
It looks like we will be having an exciting summer here in Iceland, a
summer that will be remembered because of the new lava and all the changes
that Iceland has gone through as the country continues to be molded by
nature.
So why not take a trip to Iceland this summer and how better to explore
the country than in a pickup with your own private house on top?
